A LITTLE HELP

Good questions.
Clearer answers.

A few practical notes on using this independent project.

THE BASICS

Keep it
simple.

Local notes first.
An account only for cloud features.

Do I need to sign in to write notes?

No. Choose Continue offline and enter a display name. No email or password is needed. Your offline profile, notes and preferences stay on this device. Policy links are provided without a mandatory acceptance checkbox. Sign in only for account features; cloud sync starts off and needs a separate confirmation.

Are offline and online workspaces separate?

Yes. The saved offline profile and each online account have their own workspace ID, notes, folders, reminders and preferences on this device. Signing in does not merge or upload offline notes. You can return to the saved offline profile or move notes yourself with export and import. This separation does not protect local data from someone using your operating-system account.

Can I use Scribe without internet?

Yes. Offline profiles work without a server account. Locally saved notes in an online workspace can also be edited and read offline. Sign-in, security/device-session services, cloud-storage checks, sync, and release downloads need internet. Keep an export of important notes; sync is not a backup.

How do updates work?

Downloads and updates need internet independently of cloud sign-in. Public downloads are not connected yet. Automatic update checking is not implemented in the current development build; update delivery will be documented with releases.

What happens when I turn off cloud sync?

After confirmation, notes, folders and reminders keep saving on this device, but workspace uploads and downloads stop here. Other devices keep their own sync setting. Previously uploaded data stays until you delete it. Re-enabling sync sends pending local edits and downloads cloud changes. Account security, device/session check-ins and cloud-storage checks still use the internet.

SettingsGeneralCloud sync
How much cloud storage is available?

Each online account has 2 MB shared by synced notes, folders and reminders, including Drafts and Trash. “500+ short notes” is an estimate, not a guaranteed count: longer notes and more formatting use more space. Cloud notes include formatting information, so usage may be larger than the local estimate. Local storage has no Scribe quota and depends on your device. Content that cannot sync stays saved locally.

How does Quick Capture work?

On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Space while Scribe is running, including in the system tray. Pick a folder, optionally set a reminder, and save with Ctrl + Enter. The shortcut is configurable. This website demonstration saves nothing.

Will reminders work if I close Scribe?

Scribe must remain running, open or in the system tray, to deliver native reminders. Notifications cannot appear while the app is fully quit or the PC is off. Check Windows permissions, Do Not Disturb and the scheduled time if a banner is missing.

Which export format should I choose?

Choose a Scribe backup (.scribe) to preserve note content, dates, folders, pins, Drafts, Trash and optional reminder schedules for restoring in Scribe. Choose a Markdown ZIP for readable .md files grouped by folder and use in other apps; it does not restore Scribe-specific status or reminders. Both work with offline and online workspaces. Select what to include and keep the readable export somewhere private. Only data saved on this device is exported, so sync first for changes from other devices.

Can I move offline notes into an online account?

Yes. Export from the offline workspace, sign in to the destination account, and import the file there. The same process works in the other direction and between online accounts. Imports add new notes and folders with fresh IDs without replacing existing notes. Repeated imports can create copies, so the app warns about a recorded selection. Credentials and preferences are not transferred; restoring future reminders is optional. Import does not turn cloud sync on. If it is already on, imported content uses the normal queue and 2 MB allowance.

Are notes end-to-end encrypted?

No. Cloud traffic uses HTTPS and database access is account-scoped, but Scribe does not currently offer end-to-end encryption or app-level encryption of local files or exports. Protect device access and keep sensitive secrets in an appropriate encrypted vault.

Can I sign in with Google or GitHub?

Yes, through Supabase. These are optional account integrations, not needed for an offline profile. New online accounts are asked to accept the Terms of Use, with the accepted version and timestamp recorded on the server. Signing in to an existing account does not merge offline notes. Availability depends on the release and configured services.

How do I delete an offline profile?

Review the data summary, export anything you want to keep, and type confirm. Deletion removes that profile and its saved notes, Drafts, Trash, folders, reminders, preferences, pending saves, Quick Capture draft and notification history from this device. Other workspaces and their cloud data stay untouched. Saved export files are not deleted and can be imported later.

Can I delete my account and cloud data?

Yes. Review the cloud and local data, then verify with your account password and a current authenticator code if two-step verification is enabled. A provider-only account must set a password first. After cloud deletion is confirmed, this account’s saved workspace is also removed from the device completing deletion. Other workspaces are untouched. This does not remotely wipe other devices, exports, OS backups or your separate Google/GitHub account. Export first if you want notes to import later.

Can I delete saved data without deleting my account?

Use Delete Data to choose cloud data, local data, or both, and review the selected scope before confirming. Turning sync off or signing out does not delete previously uploaded content. See the Privacy Policy for deletion scope and retention details.

Is the code open source?

First-party project code uses the MIT License, permitting use, modification and redistribution subject to retaining its notices. Dependencies have their own licenses. The Windows source is available on GitHub at github.com/arunabhajana/scribe-notes.

Is this related to another Scribe product?

No. This is a small independent personal project, not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by other products or organisations using the name Scribe.

A FEW THINGS TO TRY

When something feels off.

01

Sync is paused

Cloud sync starts off. Check its toggle in General settings, your connection and sign-in state. If enabled, pending edits retry automatically. If storage is full, review notes and Trash. Offline editing can continue.

02

A reminder didn't appear

Keep Scribe running or in the tray. Check notifications in Scribe and Windows, Do Not Disturb, the scheduled time and reminder lead time.

03

Capture won't open

Enable Quick Capture in Settings. Another application might use its shortcut. Choose another key combination and keep Scribe running.
