1. This independent project
Terms version: 2026-10-15. New online accounts, including accounts created with Google or GitHub, are asked to accept these terms during setup; the accepted version and timestamp are recorded server-side. Offline-profile creation provides links to these terms and the Privacy Policy without a mandatory acceptance checkbox.
Scribe is a small personal software project for local notes with optional cloud features. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, endorsed by, or a successor to other products or organisations using the name Scribe. References to operating systems and sign-in providers describe compatibility only.
This website provides information and demonstrations. It is not an online note editor or an account-registration service. Contact details are available on the Contact page; the Privacy page explains privacy rights and account deletion.
2. MIT-licensed first-party code
First-party project code is made available under the MIT License. It permits use, copying, modification and redistribution, including commercial use, subject to retaining the required copyright and permission notices. Third-party components keep their own license terms.
These website/service terms do not add restrictions to the MIT software permissions. The MIT License does not grant trademark rights or imply that your modified project is officially endorsed. Do not represent a fork or another product as this project's official distribution.
3. Local notes and optional services
No sign-in is required for local editing and reading. Create an offline profile with a display name; no email or password is needed. Its notes and preferences stay on your device. The saved offline profile and each signed-in account use separate local workspaces and preferences. Signing in does not convert, merge or automatically transfer your offline notes. This separation does not provide password protection against someone using your operating-system account.
Cloud sync is off by default for each account on each device. Enable it in SettingsGeneralCloud sync only after reviewing and confirming the upload explanation. Disabling it requires confirmation and stops new workspace uploads/downloads on that device, but does not erase previously uploaded data. Re-enabling sync can upload pending local edits and download cloud changes. Account sign-in, security/device-session features and cloud-storage checks still use the internet while note sync is off.
Online accounts have a shared 2 MB allowance for synced notes, folders and reminders, including Drafts and Trash. Formatting affects storage use; “500+ short notes” is illustrative, not a guaranteed count. Scribe sets no local content quota; device/WebView capacity still applies. If the cloud allowance is reached, pending local content stays on the device and may not be available on other devices until it can sync.
Use SettingsGeneralMove your notes to select and export a Scribe backup or Markdown ZIP, and to import supported files into either kind of workspace. Imports create new copies without overwriting existing notes. Repeating an import can create duplicates; the app asks before repeating a recorded selection. Export files contain readable content and omit credentials and preferences. An import does not enable cloud sync, but an online workspace with sync already enabled may upload imported content under the same allowance. Restoring future reminders is optional.
A network connection is needed for cloud/account services, release downloads and updates. Choosing cloud sync transmits supported workspace data as described in the Privacy Policy. Hosted-service access may be limited to prevent unlawful activity, security attacks or unreasonable resource use. Such limits concern the hosted service, not your rights to use the MIT code locally.
4. Your notes remain yours
You retain rights to your own note content. The project does not claim ownership of it. When you choose cloud sync, the project and its processors handle the content only to provide, secure and maintain that service, subject to the privacy notice and applicable law.
Keep copies of important work and only store or transmit material you are authorised to use. Do not use the hosted service to violate the law, compromise accounts, deliver malicious content or evade its security controls. Do not place other people's sensitive information in cloud notes without an appropriate basis.
5. Accounts, access and deletion
Keep sign-in credentials and authenticator access secure. Account features may require verification and applicable eligibility or consent requirements. The project does not currently implement verified parental consent for children's cloud accounts.
- Offline-profile deletion: choose SettingsAccountDelete offline profile, review the local data and type confirm. Only that offline profile and its saved content on this device are removed.
- Online-account deletion: choose SettingsAccountDelete account. Your password is required, plus a current authenticator code when two-step verification is enabled. This removes the account and associated active cloud data, then clears that account’s saved workspace on the device completing deletion after server confirmation.
- Data-only deletion: use SettingsAccountDelete Data to choose cloud data, local data, or both, without deleting the account. Review the selected scope before confirming.
- Keep a copy first: deletion reviews offer Export first. Saved exports can later be imported into an offline or online workspace, but cannot restore a deleted account or its authentication details. Scribe does not maintain project database backups.
No deletion email is needed. Other workspaces, exported files, local copies on other devices, OS backups and your separate Google/GitHub account are not remotely erased. Signing out and switching off sync are not deletion. See the Privacy Policy for scope, status receipts and retention details. Nothing here limits a statutory access, correction, erasure or grievance right.
6. Development status and updates
This is a development project. Public release links, dates and platform requirements will be added when confirmed. The Windows build is under development and Linux AppImage support is planned. There is no uptime, maintenance, release schedule or permanent free cloud-hosting guarantee.
Updates need internet. The current inspected build does not have an automatic updater configured. Changes to cloud processing will require an updated notice and any choice required by law. Retain the applicable MIT notice when modifying or redistributing code.
7. Warranty, liability and applicable rights
The MIT License provides the software “as is”, with its warranty and liability provisions. Subject to rights that cannot lawfully be excluded, the project makes no guarantee that software, sync, notifications or hosting will be uninterrupted, error-free, or suitable for a particular purpose.
Mandatory consumer, privacy and other rights under applicable law prevail over conflicting terms. This notice is not an agreement to waive them, nor a claim of trademark clearance or legal certification. Relevant legal requirements and dispute remedies depend on the actual service and jurisdiction.
